Flutter vs React Native in 2026: Which Should You Choose?
An honest, practical comparison of Flutter and React Native in 2026 — performance, UI, hiring, ecosystem and cost — to help you pick the right framework for your app.
Both Flutter and React Native are mature, production-proven ways to build iOS and Android apps from one codebase. Choosing between them is less about which is “better” and more about which fits your product and team.
The short version
- Choose Flutter if you want a highly custom, animation-rich UI that looks identical on every device.
- Choose React Native if your team already knows React/TypeScript or you want to share logic with a React web app.
Side-by-side
| Flutter | React Native | |
|---|---|---|
| Language | Dart | TypeScript / JavaScript |
| Rendering | Own engine (Impeller) — pixel-identical UI | Native platform components via the New Architecture |
| Performance | Excellent, especially for animation | Excellent for most apps since the New Architecture |
| Web sharing | Flutter Web (best for app-like UIs) | Share logic and some UI with React web apps |
| Hiring pool | Growing fast | Very large (React developers) |
| Best for | Brand-heavy, custom UI, design-led apps | Teams in the React ecosystem, content-heavy apps |
Performance
For the vast majority of business apps — forms, lists, maps, payments, chat — users will not notice a difference. Flutter has a slight edge in complex custom animations; React Native’s New Architecture closed most of the historical gap.
Developer experience
Flutter’s hot reload, strong typing and all-in-one tooling make it very productive. React Native with Expo has become remarkably smooth too, with over-the-air updates and easy builds.
Ecosystem
React Native benefits from the huge npm ecosystem. Flutter’s package ecosystem on pub.dev is smaller but high-quality and well-maintained for common needs.
Cost
Costs are broadly similar. The bigger cost driver is your existing team: if you already have React developers, React Native lowers both build and long-term maintenance costs.
Our recommendation
At GrowwApps we build with both. We usually suggest:
- Flutter for consumer apps where brand and motion matter, and for teams starting fresh.
- React Native when there is a React web app or in-house React team.
- Native (Swift/Kotlin) only when you need deep platform features like complex widgets, AR or heavy background processing.
